Day 3 of my P90x Challenge

The holidays added some fifteen unwanted pounds. Although I love having a little more meat in some places, every time I wear my clothes, I feel like I am having chest pains.

And after my visit at the ER two weeks ago because of chest pain, I started re-evaluating my so-called health routine.

Heart attacks and high blood pressure are in my genetic pool. I’ve been very good at watching what I eat and exercising but during holidays, I usually don’t have time to exercise and I eat every thing you can imagine!

So on Sunday, I decided it’s time to make some drastic change to my day-to-day.

My day begins by getting my two younger kids ready for school. If the weather is nice, my dear friend, Dawn (thankful for Dawn!!), and her kids who live next door, walk with my youngest and I to school. We get to chat (and vent), be outside and get about ¾ mile of walking! And if the weather is nice, we can be a little ambitious and walk around the lake – a total of about 3 miles!

At around 8:45am, I am back at home. If I end up walking around the lake – that’s just additional thirty minutes.

I’m the kind of person who starts her day by cleaning the house. I empty every laundry basket, garbage pails, dish washer; sweep floor, dust tables, windex-countertops. Beds have to be made, and books have to be put away.

Around 10am, I get to check my email. Depending on the day, that can consume an hour or two of my time. If I have to do some online banking, I do it around that time, too.

I’m supposed to start writing by 10am, but my mood is just not into writing at this time.
(It’s probably because I uploaded what I’ve written into my Kindle and I re-read every single chapter – and that’s a big “no-no”!)

So I figured if I write my experiences with the P90x challenge, (regardless whether someone reads it or not), I’d be able to lose that extra 15 pounds, be toned again and maybe I’ll be motivated to write that last chapter!

Plus, as Emily of theMotherhood.com posted in “Healthy Moms and Healthy Families” circle, “Older women who did an hour or two of strength exercises had improved cognitive function a year later.”

So here I am …

Sunday was my first day of my P90x challenge. Day 1 is Chest and Back with Ab RipperX!

I haven’t seriously worked out in a year so I know I won’t be able to do the forms the way it should be. But it doesn’t matter because I have to start somehow.

As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once wrote,
“What is not started today, is not finished tomorrow…”

Even with apple pie, if I didn’t start eating half the pie today, I’ll still have a full pie tomorrow – and less weight to lose (lol)!

But since I ate so many apple pies, banana foster and tons of pan cakes (I love carbs! Carbs just make me happy!), I have to start to motivate myself to be fit again!

Day 1 was supposed to be a 60 minute chest and back work-out and a 15-minute Ab RipperX…I was only able to do 40 minute of mediocre chest and back. Ab Ripper X consists of about 350 reps of different “core” exercise. I was only able to do 200 badly executed “core” exercise. Wait, not “core” – more of a “trunk” exercise!

Day 2 was Pylometrics! Oh boy, a lot of jumping, squats. I was only able to do 40 minutes and I can feel it in my legs and quads!

Today is Day 3, shoulders and arms and Ab RipperX (again!)

As Tony Horton of BeachBody.com’s P90x said in the DVD, this routine is a glamour routine! Our shoulders and arms are exposed when we’re wearing tank tops or a halter dress, so we better tone those arms and shoulders!

And..dn’t forget to breathe, feel the burn and stand tall!

Just to give you an overview of what’s in store in Day 3 P90x challenge: Check this out:
Ten minute warm up (I'm already gasping for breath at this time...)
  Alternating shoulder press
  In and out bicep curls
  Two arm tricep kickbacks
   Repeat….

   Ballistic stretch (30 seconds only!)
   Deep swimmer press
   Alternating full concentration curls
   Chair dips
   Repeat…

   Upright rows (Stand tall)
   Static arm curls
   Flip grip twist kickbacks
   Repeat…

   Ballistic stretch (30 seconds)
   Seated shoulder flys
   Crouching Cohen curls
    Lying down Tricep extensions
    Repeat…

    Straight arms shoulder flys
    Congdon Curls
    Tri side rise

    Stretch – cool down!

Unlike my friend, Sonia, who is more disciplined and loves to push to the next level , I’m more of someone who only pushes to a point that it’s still comfortable. I can’t do that mind-over-matter thing because I’m kind of lazy.

But hey, I did the Day 3 challenge and is looking forward to tomorrow’s Day 4 Challenge: 90 minute yoga.

Now, Do I do the P90x DVD yoga or do I attend the Flow class at AlluemYoga  or do I give Bikram Yoga another shot?

We’ll see what happens tomorrow…

  3. Honey, Good for you. Have you researched ZUMBA? You can burn lots of calories, build muscle and dance your hour away. I think you would love it. I am taking an hour Senior Zumba class - Nothing "senior" about it.

  4. The legs and back workout still gets me and I've done it for almost 6 months now. I am always sore for a day or two but I guess that's a good thing. Are you a Beachbody Coach? I don't see anywhere on your site saying you are. To learn more go to www.MyHealthyFitLife.com. You get discounts on the products and the chance to earn money. I like doing it as it keeps me accountable to working out. Feel free to contact me about it. Stick with P90X. I went from doing 2 total pull ups with legs and back to 82 at the end of 90 days. Bring It!

Completed my first 16 Week IsaBody Challenge: Believe You Have A Purpose

My family is what matters most to me.  I’m 51 and a mother of 4 (ages 14 – 26). I wanted to be healthier, more active and stronger not just for me, but for the people I love.  I wanted to set an example for my family that we each possess the tools to master our wellness and vitality. I've always been petite except when I was pregnant ( when I gained an average of 50 pounds per pregnancy - 4 times!) Over the years I had tried various diet and exercise regimens, and I did enjoy a degree of success, but the results were not to the level I hoped for, and they were somewhat short lived.   Achieving stable, long-lasting results proved stubbornly elusive.    Then when I hit menopause everything became more difficult.    My body stopped cooperating altogether, and I was constantly grumpy. My waist and hips expanded and I found myself napping in the afternoons.    I started to accept the idea that there would be this new, less vibrant version of me. I just completed my P

Immigration and Family: Will my mom ever get to see my daughter walk down the aisle

Last year when my father passed away in the Philippines, I went home and took some time to visit the U.S. Embassy in Manila to ask what the options are for my mother to return to the U.S. The consul reminded me of the 10-year travel ban. That on or after November 8, 2015 — not earlier – or 10 years after my mom, was deported in 2005 for overstaying her visa, I can email the U.S. Embassy and inquire about my mother’s approved petition. I asked if I need to file another petition, and she informed me I didn’t have to. I asked if I could… and she stopped me and said to ask everything on or after November 8, 2015. This is where I am, and where my thoughts are drifting as I celebrate this month my 16th American birthday. I am counting the months, the weeks and the days. My daughter is getting married in January 2016 and I would love to have my entire family, especially my mother, to be here when that momentous occasion happens.

SPICE-up a young child's development: social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional

Children are the precious gems of a family. When they’re young and innocent, they are like sponges that willingly and quickly absorb any knowledge and emotion. That’s why at an early age, we encourage our children to read, be creative, be happy and feed their curiosity. With all the technology and instant gratification that children get from playing video or computer games, asking a child to read a good book has been a challenge for some parents .     “Your children are not your children.       They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.       They come through you but not from you,       And though they are with you, and yet they belong not to you.       You may give them your love but not your thoughts,        For they have their own thoughts.        You may house their bodies but not their souls,        For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,        which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.” -                     Kahlil Gibr

Helping others surpass their goals and expectations

"It's not about the end goal. It's who you become by consistently pushing to the edge of your limits." - Robin Sharma Do you ever wonder why you stumble on new things?  Do you ever wonder why unsuspecting strangers cross your path? Do you ever wonder why your mind takes you to a direction you didn't think exist? I was walking to StarBucks to meet my husband when I noticed a sign...

Still shaky, skidded in snow, but so blessed my guardian angels are looking after me!

"Never again wonder, what to be thankful for..."   - Rick Warren, The Purpose Driven Life It’s yet another snowy day in New Jersey. Beautiful, yes but dangerous! In line with my goal for this month is to get back on schedule. I got up around 4am to get my 15yo ready for his Model United Nations conference. (Thankful that our neighbor offered to drive him to school by 5:30am ) I got my 9yo ready for school and I'm thankful that my other neighbor offered to drive him to school. I then drove my husband to the train station to Manhattan. I decided to stop by the Community Center and decided to run a fast 5K on the treadmill. I was 1 mile short because I was so sweaty and hot. (Note to self: dress lightly next time) While cooling down inside the car, I read Day 14’s chapter of Rick Warren's the “Purpose Driven Life” book. I felt really good because it just reminded me that there is always something to be thankful for no matter how awful yo
