How to Instill a Love of Fitness In Your Kids

How to Instill a Love of Fitness In Your Kids by Erin Vaughan Let’s face it: most days, it’s hard enough to get yourself to the gym without adding an eight-year-old into the mix. But the lifestyle choices you teach kids now could have a huge impact on the rest of their adulthoods. Research shows that healthy habits formed in early development are more likely to stick, so it’s never too early to get kids stretching their muscles! Kids over six need about an hour of activity a day to stay healthy, and weekly strength training to promote the development of strong bones. But you don’t need me to tell you that getting kids up and going isn’t always easy, especially when there are video games and toys calling from the other room. Still, there are a couple of ways you can give kids a nudge in the right direction—and closer to a healthy adulthood! Make It Fun As grownups, we tend to treat working out like another chore on our to-do list. But to turn exercise into a lifetime...

The Joy of Giving : ABC Project - Apples, Books and Crayons

I’m a Psychologist by profession, born and raised here in the Philippines. I worked in the Human Resources world for the past two decades before I ventured into my online teaching and tutoring career – teaching English to foreigners in relations to their business communication needs. I’m a staunch advocate for caring for the environment and  wellness programs leading to volunteerism. It’s the life we embraced as a family since the early 90’s. I got married late but I’m thankful that we’re blessed with one dutiful son named “Vyasadeva das.” His name, “Vyasadeva” was derived from a Sanskrit name which means the literary incarnation of ‘Krishna’ and the word “das” meant servant. I went to Centro Escolar University in Paranque (aka Generosa de Leon Memorial School), an all-girls institution, where I completed my  secondary education.  I got my taste of what it was to be with all the girls in completing my academic and co-curricular requirements...

Travel Diary: One Sunday Afternoon at Central Park of Skopje, Macedonia

By Flora El Don’t you just love October? October is the most colorful season. The warm sunny day creates an aura of positive energy and goodwill. The days and nights had been hectic since medical school started, and I felt drained. However, this Sunday I woke up with a positive attitude and I prepared myself physically and mentally to go out for a run. Maybe today seemed brighter than the other days. Maybe it’s because of the sunlight that reflected the green and light brown trees surrounding my huge bedroom windows. Maybe it’s the gold shining light that hit my eyes in the morning and for the first time in a while I woke up smiling instead of feeling grumpy that I needed to get up early in the morning. This sunny disposition was a feeling I wouldn’t exchange for anything -  I felt free of duties and responsibilities. I just knew that I had to love ME that day and so I did. I left my gorgeous, comfortable bed and had a good oatmeal breakfast ...

Daily Game Plan: Fatherhood and the benefits of coloring

Kris Maszkiewicz is the founder of TopColoringPages.net, a website where coloring fans can download for free, printable coloring pages such as cartoon characters, super heroes, celebrities, nature designs for children and adults. Kris is based in Poland and is enjoying fatherhood. GottaLoveMom had a chance to talk to him about fatherhood. What inspired you to create your website? I am a father of a little boy named Antoni. He appeared in my world a year ago and virtually turned my world upside down. Everybody is ready for it until it happens, right? The day Antoni was born I decided to use my new-found energy and enthusiasm to create a website where children around the world can download coloring pages for free. As a child, I loved coloring pages and I thought that it was a good idea to spread this activity for future generations. That’s why I put together the website,  topcoloringpages.net,  with classic coloring pages in a modern package: You can ...

Fitness: Isometric Exercise, Body Weight Challenge and Strength Workout

Day 3 of the Team SELF’s New Year’s Challenge is a combination of isometric exercise and body weight exercises. This strength workout is all about holding a position and resting in between sets and moves, therefore, engaging the muscles you’re working on while you’re staying still for 20 seconds. It doesn’t sound like there’s a lot of flexing of muscles but once you tried it, you’ll understand. The first time I heard the word “isometric” was almost 3 years ago, I was turning 50 and I just tried Beachbody’s P90x3.                  “Isometrix: A strong foundation is essential for overall fitness, so Isometrix combines isometric contraction with instability to make your core rock solid. Isometric contractions occur when the muscle neither shortens nor lengthens and the joint angle does not change, building static strength.” Did that make sense to you?
